My motor runs but the door doesn't move. What's wrong?

The drive has lost its connection to the door. On a sectional motor that is usually a stripped gear or a broken trolley carriage; on a roller door motor it is often the drive coupling or the manual release having been left disengaged. It is worth checking the release first — if someone pulled the cord during a power cut and never re-engaged it, the motor will run happily and do nothing at all, and that costs you nothing to fix.

How long should a garage door motor last?

A good unit on a well-balanced door commonly runs ten to fifteen years, and often longer on a low-use door. On a door with a tired spring the same motor might manage five, because it has been lifting weight it was never meant to carry. That is the single biggest variable, and it is why we look at the spring before quoting a replacement motor — otherwise you buy the same failure twice.

Do I need an electrician to install a garage door motor in WA?

It depends on how it is powered. Most modern motors plug into a standard power point, and fitting one to an existing point is not electrical installation work. If your garage has no power point, or the motor is to be hard-wired, that IS electrical installation work in Western Australia and must be done by a licensed electrical contractor, who issues a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Installation. We tell you at the estimate which of those two situations you are in, rather than after.

My remote has stopped working — is the motor dead?

Usually not. Work through the cheap causes first: a flat battery, a remote that needs re-pairing after a power surge, a bent or disconnected aerial wire on the motor head, or interference from a newly installed device nearby. If the wall button still operates the door, the motor is fine and the fault is in the remote or the receiver. That is a much smaller job than a replacement unit.

What happens to my garage door in a power cut?

Every automatic door has a manual release — usually a cord with a red handle hanging from the trolley, or a keyed external release on a door with no other access. Pulling it disconnects the motor so the door can be opened by hand, which only works if the door is properly balanced. In the Perth Hills, where storm outages last longer, we recommend battery backup and we check that the release actually works on every visit, because a release nobody has tested in ten years often doesn't.
